Steven B. Williams

Steven B. Williams | Writer (Fiction, Screenwriting, Poetry) Speaker (Writing Workshops, Spoken Word, LGBTQ+)

Hailing from Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and with over 10 years writing experience, eight of those writing for and later editing for a major social justice website, Steven Williams is pushing boundaries in the creative arts and daring to be different.

Described as “one to watch” on the poetry scene just one year after making his performance debut, and praised by nationally recognized poet Matt Abbott as a “sensitive voice” whose “words have such a command over you that you sometimes forget to breathe” Steven has won acclaim for his ability to take on highly emotive subjects with subtlety, skill and humour.

Steven is also a published novelist, with his debut novel “Heartsnare” released in 2016 by Lethe Press. The novel won praise for colouring outside of the lines of the usual dark fantasy tropes, with Lambda Literary’s Damian Serbu saying, “Rarely does a story about monsters and unknown creatures blend a horrifying and unconventional world with verisimilitude. Many try, but most fall short in one area or the other, because it requires such grace to achieve.  Book One of Steven B. Williams’s creation of the Unbraverse, Heartsnare, accomplishes this feat and leaves you waiting in anticipation for Book Two.”

Williams is currently working on the follow-up installment of the Umbraverse.

Williams has also bravely taken on the world of online serial fiction, having amassed thousands of reads on serials “Hellswood” and “The Spider”. He was nominated for a 2017 Watty Award. He is now busy writing a follow-up to “Hellswood”, and bringing to a close “The Spider” while working on two further serial pieces.

Williams’ varied career has also seen him embark on writing for screen. In 2017 he was picked for New Writing North’s Significant Ink programme where he worked with industry professionals to craft his northern-based dramedy “Anxious” which was praised by writers Chris Neal and Danielle Jawando for its deft comedy and elevation of LGBT-inclusive voices.

When not writing, Williams can be found illustrating and painting, eating vegan food, or cooing over his cats.
